Save Money on Your Term Life Insurance

Let’s face it. Nobody likes to talk about life insurance.

This is undoubtedly due to the fact that the main benefit from having life insurance is if you are deceased, and resting under 6 feet of soil in a nice coffin.

I am not trying to minimize the good that life insurance does, as it is a key part of planning for your family if, god forbid, something were to happen to an insured. Life Insurance can ease the burden of surviving family members, and I can personally say that I have seen too many situations where a spouse and children weren’t adequately thought of in advance. It isn’t a pretty picture.

In this entry, we will discuss term life insurance and the corresponding rates. Don’t get me wrong, permanent life insurance is a great value if you can afford the premiums. However, initially we are more concerned with getting coverage in force first…So let’s get to the basics:

Term life insurance

Also called temporary insurance, covers a person against death for a limited time, the term. For example, the term might be until children are grown, or until college is paid for, or until retirement. You pay for the policy period and at the end of the term, the contract or policy expires. If no claims are made against the policy during the term, you don't receive any benefits after the policy expires, just like auto or homeowners insurance.

Term Life Insurance Premiums:

Term Life Insurance premiums are currently at an all time low. However, since I am in the industry, I have seen several pieces of correspondence that foreshadow term life insurance rate increases in the very near future. Therefore, it is probably a good idea to see if you can save money now before rates increase.

Are you Healthy?

This is the first question that you should consider when getting new coverage or replacing the life insurance coverage that is currently inforce. Believe it or not, the insurance company is extremely diligent in underwriting and they will pull your doctor’s records, and usually subject you to an exam, blood and urine test, and an EKG sometimes as well.

So you might as well succumb to the fact that there is virtually no way to hide any impairments from the company. They will penalize you for smoking, family history of cancer and heart disease, and your weight.
